The History of Hardware

What began as a small chain of stores established by a group of Chicago-area retailers in 1924 has evolved into the nation’s leading retailer-owned cooperatives. Ace changed the retail landscape by allowing individual stores to purchase merchandise in bulk to save money and buy at the lowest possible price. This partnership enabled even the smaller stores to compete effectively at retail despite larger stores in their market. And to this very day, Ace Hardware Corporation is still owned solely and exclusively by the local Ace retail entrepreneurs. Over 4,600 of Ace’s 4,700 stores around the globe are independently owned and operated by local entrepreneurs. These hard working men and women are part of the fabric of your community. They are small business owners who are local and loyal...just like it ought to be. While others have become large and impersonal, at Ace, we’ve remained small and very personal. That’s why we say a visit to Ace, is like a visit to your neighbor.

Entrepreneurs Richard Hesse, E. Gunnard Lindquist, Frank Burke and Oscar Fisher forge the beginning of Ace Hardware by uniting their Chicago-area hardware stores to increase buying power and profits.

Eleven retailers join the fledgling company, now officially named Ace Stores, Inc.

Ace Stores, Inc., officially changes its name to Ace Hardware Corporation. As its retailers base and buying power grows, Ace competes successfully with mail order houses & chain stores.

Richard Hesse resigns, turning the company’s leadership over to
Arthur H. Krausman. Hesse agrees to sell the company to its retailers for $6 million. The transition to a retailer-owned cooperative was
complete by 1976.

The History of

Davis Lumber Company was formed on October 1, 1907 and incorporated on February 24, 1922. In the year 1937, the Anderson family took existing stock from their own hardware store, located on the west side of G Street, and exchanged their business for common stock in the Davis Lumber Company. From that point on the Anderson’s have been instrumental in the growth of the company. On June 22, 1962, Donald, Dora and Essie Anderson purchased the Davis Lumber Company.

In 1966, Davis Lumber Company joined into the Ace Hardware Cooperative in order to meet the needs of their customers. In 1999, the store changed its name to Davis Ace, naming their buildings Ace Housewares, Ace Hardware, Ace Garden & Pet, and Ace Rock & Rental. Jennifer Anderson, daughter of Dora and Don Anderson, is the president. She works hard to accommodate the needs of the changing community by continually updating products and services.

The newest addition to the family is Aggie Ace at 606 W. Covell Boulevard, which opened in August 2012. This new store format is the latest development by Ace Hardware to provide a neighborhood hardware store in a small express size. We are so excited to be celebrating our 90 years in business. Our store has evolved from Davis Lumber to Davis Lumber & Hardware Company to Davis Ace and now to include the new Aggie Ace. It’s always a pleasure to service the Davis community.
